What to Wear for Senior Photos – The Guys Edition

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a ton of seniors over the years, and today I want to share some style tips with the guys (because we all know mom’s not the only one who wants you to look good for these photos!). What to wear for senior photos- the guys edition is here to answer all your burning questions about styling your high school senior boy.

One of the most common questions I get from parents is: “What should my son wear for his senior photos?” My advice is always to keep it simple, but meaningful. Guys usually wear 1-2 outfits for their session. Sometimes we bump it to 3 outfits because they played a sport and want to rep that jersey.

Go for 1) something solid, 2) something patterned, and/or 3) something that truly captures who they are right now (because trust me, these photos will be in frames forever – for you and for them).

Here are some fun and easy options to spur inspiration:

  • A button-down shirt with a t-shirt underneath for a quick switch from a more dressed-up look to something casual (it’s all about versatility!)
  • A hoodie or sweatshirt with jeans (because, let’s be honest, teens basically live in these)
  • Some guys go all out and dress up in a suit (classy vibes!)
  • Others love to rep the college they’re heading to with a logo tee or sweatshirt
  • Don’t forget about their school jersey – sports are a big part of who they are
  • Musicians? Bring the instrument!
  • If they’ve already got their cap and gown, why not bring that along too?

Senior sessions with guys typically last about 45 minutes (because let’s face it, most of them aren’t huge fans of photo shoots), but not to worry we’ll capture so many amazing shots in that timeframe! If they’re changing outfits or we’re exploring a cool spot like Old Town Scottsdale, it might run a little longer – but, it’ll still be a ton of fun!

Tips for Styling Senior Photos for Guys:

  • Stick to solid colors to keep things timeless
  • Add a patterned shirt or jacket for a little personality
  • Keep it age-appropriate and comfortable – they’ll feel more relaxed in front of the camera
  • Incorporate props like sports gear, musical instruments, or even a favorite book for those personal touches

The Best Go-To Senior Guy Outfit List:

  • Outfit 1- Casual jeans and tee, or buttoned down with rolled sleeves
  • Outfit 2- Dressy suit and tie, or dress pants and buttoned shirt
  • Outfit 3- Sports jersey for high school or new college t-shirt
  • Option if available- Cap and Gown over a dressy look
