What to Wear for Desert Family Photos
Don’t Panic! I know what you’re thinking, “I’ve booked my photoshoot (yay!), but I don’t know what to wear for desert family photos!”
I’ve got you mama! Take a deep breath.
Follow my tried and true styling tips and it will all come together smoothly.
Let’s start with you…
The Mama
Find that perfect dress or blouse that makes you feel amazing, then build everyone’s look around you. The Family
Coordinate their colors with your outfit, then layer it up! Ties, suspenders, vests, belts, simple necklaces, headbands, styled hats (no sport caps), rolled hems, cardigans, or flower crowns…. it all adds dimension and that lovely cozy-factor in your photos. The Colors
I highly recommend choosing neutral colors and solids versus bright colors and busy prints. This detail allows you and your love-soaked family to shine in your photos, rather than being distracted by bright busy clothes.
The Shoes
Don’t forget to keep it neutral in the footwear too. I’d even pass on socks if possible. It’s the new look right?! I love a gentleman (or little man) in a khaki pant, with a little roll at the hem and loafers with no socks
The Vibe
Whether you are all dressed up or super casual, I’ll be cueing you into the best poses to capture your gorgeous features and sweet connections with one another. There will be a few standard portraits to warm up, but we’ll mostly focus on lifestyle portraits to highlight all the magic! Dresses for twirling, sweaters for cuddling, and hats for getting playful all help in bringing your photos to the next level!

Dessert pictures like these are beautiful but I’m curious, how much rough hiking in nice clothes is involved to get to places like this? I like the natural look (not on a flat trail) but am considering everyone’s shoes.
Hi Marlee! Thanks for your comment. It’s true, you do need to take into account walking to your locations in the desert and your clients’ footwear. This particular session required sidewalk walking before popping into our desert setting. The clients had to walk less than 20 feet off the sidewalk. Additionally, regardless of my location, I tell clients in their prep emails to wear comfy shoes for walking to our photo spots. Then, they can switch into nice heels for their photos. I hope that’s helpful!
