First things first, where to take your maternity photos?

Over the years, I’ve seen it all. The location really depends on the tone you want to capture, and the type of photos you’re aiming for. Nowadays, anything goes. Even your home is a welcome location for natural, lifestyle photos that capture your family at the core.

I love an editorial maternity photoshoot in the studio — it’s sophisticated, yet inviting, and means that unpredictable weather simply can’t get in the way. On the other hand, nature can bring her own storytelling effect. From a desert maternity photoshoot to an oceanside session, think about the location that fits your story and lifestyle. 

Don’t forget the textures and colors that will naturally become a part of the photos too. We see a lot of beige and yellow from outdoor photos in the desert, whereas the studio creates soft whites with very clean backgrounds.

For sessions with me, make sure to have 2-3 outfit changes ready to go! (I have a luxury client closet of dresses you can select from for your session too.)

1. Casual, chic or both

Grab your favorite black dress or put on your favorite jeans with a simple white top. Both are a flattering way to celebrate this milestone. It just depends on which outfit fits your personality type better! Or ask your photographer if you can wear a few outfits, and try both.

2. Take maternity photos with your partner

Sometimes, your partner can be unfairly left out of maternity photos. As the mother, having the focus on you makes every bit of sense, but, if you want your partner to be a part of your shoot, all the better. 

3. Include other children

This is a beautiful way to get the family photos you need, and maternity photos too. It’s also a nice way to honor the season of life you’re in, whether that’s newly married with two dogs, or a growing family with siblings meeting for the first time.

This is a recommendation, more than an idea, but something that should certainly be on your list for a 2024 photoshoot. It also helps to make you feel relaxed and confident going into the session. This will always (and I mean always) photograph better because the camera will wash out and flatten our features with what would be an otherwise flattering “everyday” makeup look.
